In 2004 a workshop with 40 deaf youths jolted FRIEND into looking for an income generation project for them. The youths many of whom were working for shoe/garment industry were laid off and lacked education and skills to find suitable employement.
Nileshni Sekar, a FRIEND volunteer at the time, browsed the internet and learnt the quilling techinques on line. She then taught the youths, 10 of whom are earning regular income since then.
These cards are widely available in supermarket chains and duty free outlets. These cards have now been joined with artistically designed cards of other youths and ex-offenders.
The range include sand cards, traditional tapa, contemporary designed tapa as well as hand painted cards.
